A 2-year-old child who was reported missing from his home Thursday night was found asleep and unharmed in a nearby garbage cart several hours later, police said Friday.
Police conducted a door-to- door search of the neighborhood in search of Dante Best, who wandered away from his home in the 2100 block of W. Grant St., said Lt. Billy Hacker of the Sensitive Crimes unit.
Dante followed an 8-year-old girl who left the Best home after visiting Dante's siblings. The children had been playing a video game and the mother apparently fell asleep, Hacker said.
The 8-year-old girl told Dante not to follow her, but he persisted. For some reason, the girl placed Dante in a garbage cart that was lying on its side and then pushed it upright.
Dante was found asleep in the garbage cart at about 11 p.m. Thursday and taken to a hospital for observation.
