SUMMERFEST ACTS

Milwaukee Journal, The,  Apr 8, 1995  by Dave Tianen

The Journal Sentinel staff

Summerfest's Pabst Showcase stage continues its growing emphasis on contemporary country music with a 1995 lineup that includes Trisha Yearwood, the Tractors, the Mavericks, Confederate Railroad and Pam Tillis. The brewery announced the complete lineup Friday. The traditional nostalgic bent of the stage will be represented by the Guess Who, Chubby Checker, Steppenwolf and local show band Barry's Truckers. The Truckers, who have become the traditional kickoff band for the showcase, will again open the festival on June 29 with shows at 9 and 11 p.m. The remaining schedule:

Friday, June 30 at 10 p.m.: Chubby Checker. The novelty dance king, a frequent Showcase visitor, made a surprise return to the Top 20 in the late '80s when the Fat Boys joined him for a remake of "The Twist."

Saturday, July 1 at 10 p.m.: Steppenwolf. The band's anthem "Born To Be Wild" just got one of the more surreal revivals of the past year with a remake duet by Ozzy Osbourne and Miss Piggy.

Sunday, July 2 at 10:15 p.m.: The Mavericks. The rockabilly flavored Mavericks are still in the country Top 10 with "What A Crying Shame," more than a year after the album's release.

Monday, July 3 at 10:15 p.m.: Pam Tillis, the singer/songwriter daughter of country legend Mel Tillis. Her current hit single is "I Was Blown Away."
