DSHA comeback stuns Lutheran in softball

Milwaukee Journal, The,  Apr 8, 1995

After dropping its first two games of the season, the Milwaukee Divine Savior Holy Angels softball team needed someone to step up and provide a lift.

Senior third baseman Sarah Smyzcek did just that as her line- drive single to center field with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth inning brought home two runs, giving the host Dashers a dramatic, 7-6, come-from-behind victory over Milwaukee Lutheran on Friday.

In a game called after six innings for a time limit, the Dashers battled back from a 6-0 deficit with three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth.

"It was a great game," said DSHA coach Gary Heun, whose team improved to 1-2. "We spotted them six runs, but the girls came back."

In other area softball games on Friday:

Milwaukee Pius XI 11, Waukesha Catholic Memorial 0: Senior Debbie Ulatowski tossed her second no-hitter of the season and Amy Schroeder and Christy Weibel both homered as the visiting Popes remained unbeaten in the Metro. In three games this season, Ulatowski has given up only one hit, while striking out 28 and walking five.

Milwaukee Thomas More 12, Kenosha St. Joseph 4: Senior third baseman Kathy Ogroski had three hits and knocked in four runs and junior second baseman Shelly Lidwin belted a solo home run as the host Cavaliers also remained unbeaten in the Metro.

Oak Creek 13, Waukesha South 0: In a Southeast Conference game, junior Rachel Lockwood struck out 10 and gave up only four hits in her five-inning shutout. Senior shortstop Nikki Nelson hit her first home run of the season for the host Knights, who led, 9-0, after two innings.

Sussex Hamilton 17, Brown Deer 11: In a Parkland Conference slugfest, Keri Landski and Cathy Knaack both homered for host Hamilton, which scored two or more runs in every inning except the seventh.

Milwaukee Bay View 11, Cedarburg 2: Junior Kelly Albrecht threw her first career no- hitter in a non-conference game played at Lewis Field. Albrecht, who had 11 strikeouts and 6 walks, gave up single runs in the first and second innings before the host Redcats erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman shortstop Gabrielle Gondek singled and scored and tripled in two runs to highlight the inning.

Girls soccer

West Allis Hale 2, Kenosha Tremper 1: Toni Daniels' unassisted breakaway goal at the 32- minute mark of the second half proved to be the game-winner in the Southeast Conference match at Tremper. Tremper grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Liz Sierra, but the Huskies tied it in the first 2 minutes of the second half when Melissa Gutierrez scored off a pass from Lisa Ozburn.

Waukesha Catholic Memorial 3, Racine St. Catherine's 0: Midfielder Jennifer Stevens notched a goal and added an assist for the visiting Crusaders.

New Berlin West 4, Milwaukee Riverside 0: The visiting Vikings broke open a scoreless first half with three of their four goals in the first 25 minutes of the second half.

Baseball

Milwaukee Pius XI 3, Racine St. Catherine's 2: First baseman Eric Groholski came off the bench midway through the game and drove in the winning run with a one-out, bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning. Matt Cotter picked up the victory for the host Popes, who improved to 2-0 in the Metro Conference. He retired all 10 batters he faced, striking out six.

Shoreland Lutheran 17-1, St. John's Military Academy 1-6: Peter Marquardt struck out 12 and allowed only one hit and Dave Bilitz had 2 doubles and 4 RBI in the first game, but Brian Miller managed to salvage the split in the Midwest Classic Conference doubleheader as he struck out five and scattered seven hits in the second game at Shoreland Lutheran.

Oconomowoc 13, Milwaukee Riverside 0: Andy Neary and Jeff Kwiatkowski combined to blank the Tigers in a non-conference game that was called after five innings in Oconomowoc. Jeff Mohns had a home run and 3 RBI and Brian Smith, who signed a baseball scholarship Division 1 Creighton earlier this year, added 2 RBI for the Coons (1-0).

Milwaukee Vincent 13, Milwaukee Washington 3: Joe Seiberlich struck out 11 and walked 6 as the host Vikings crusied to a non-conference victory.

Boys golf

New Berlin West 251, Franklin 266: Junior Aaron Fagan shot a low-round 37 lifting the Vikings to victory. Six golfers were scored instead of the usual four in the non-conference match at Rivermoor Country Club in Waterford.
