Free parking at lake may come to end

Milwaukee Journal, The,  Apr 5, 1995  by Eugene Baer

Special to the Journal Sentinel

Free parking on Pewaukee Lake within the village limits of Pewaukee may come to an end by Memorial Day.

But who will pay, how much and for which parking spaces will not be settled until at least May 8, when the Village Board is expected to act on a recommendation from the Park and Recreation Committee

The board on Monday referred the matter to that committee for study.

Village Administrator Frank Paulus said many non-residents parked along the lakefront while using Pewaukee Lake for recreation, especially during the summer.

"We'd like to get some funding from non-residents who park in the village and use the lake," Paulus said.

He said the issue involved 85 parking spaces along the lake and that the revenue raised would go toward maintaining the parking area.

But not everyone sees the issue as quite that simple. "Village residents have expressed concern that they will have to pay to park when they're downtown shopping," said trustee Craig McGee, who also expressed fears that fees might be imposed on other downtown parking spots as well.

"We need to survey the downtown business people to see what they have to say before we put a fee on parking," Trustee Scott Bauer said.

A number of proposals on the parking issue are being considered, including charging parking fees only between Memorial Day through Labor Day, setting the fee at $2.00, and issuing residents parking permits, either free or for a fee.
