Steven H. Fibich, editors' kin

Milwaukee Journal, The,  Apr 5, 1995

Steven H. Fibich, a son and brother of two former editors at The Milwaukee Journal, died Tuesday of a bacterial infection at the age of 37.

Fibich had battled cancer for several years but had shown up for work as recently as last Friday, said his father, Howard Fibich, who retired in December 1993 as deputy managing editor of The Journal.

"He was a guy who determined early in life that he was going to do his best," Howard Fibich said. "He had his own set of values that weren't material values. He focused on family more than anything."

His sister, Linda Fibich, resigned as night editor in the fall of 1993 to join the University of Maryland journalism faculty.

Fibich, of Oak Creek, is also survived by his mother, Carrol; wife, Patricia; and children, Amy, 9, and Matthew, 7.

A longtime employee of Cooper Industries, Fibich studied at the University of Wisconsin- Madison as an undergraduate and earned his master's degree at Cornell University. At UW- Madison, he played the tuba in the marching band.

For several years, Fibich and his family lived in Houston, Texas, but moved back to Wisconsin this year after a bone marrow transplant.

"He wanted to be on familiar territory," Howard Fibich said.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Schmidt and Bartelt Funeral Home, 10121 W. North Ave., Wauwatosa. Services will immediately follow the visitation, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society.
