A Milwaukee man recently released from prison is expected to face criminal charges Wednesday in the slaying of a man outside a West Milwaukee tavern during a robbery.
Alois J. Dombrowski, 58, was stabbed to death early Tuesday in the parking lot of The New Elbow Room, 3812 W. Greenfield Ave., police said. The suspect was arrested hours after the stabbing when police traced a trail of blood to the home of an acquaintance of the suspect.
Police say Dombrowski was killed in a robbery.
West Milwaukee Police Chief Eugene Oldenburg said Dombrowski had lived in Delafield but had moved recently. Based on preliminary information, he said, Dombrowski and the suspect did not know each other.
The suspect, whose last known address was in the 2200 block of W. National Ave., was arrested within hours of the slaying. He was being held Tuesday in the Milwaukee County Jail.
Oldenburg identified the suspect as a 27-year-old man who was released March 14 from the Wisconsin prison system after serving four years of a six-year sentence for an armed robbery conviction in Milwaukee County. Previously, the man had served a prison sentence for burglary, Oldenburg said.
The killing marked the first murder in West Milwaukee since 1981. It also marked the first murder in Milwaukee County outside the city of Milwaukee this year.
Oldenburg gave this account of the events:
Police received a 911 call at 2:06 a.m. Tuesday from someone reporting that a man had been stabbed in a tavern parking lot. Residents in the area had heard people arguing in the parking lot and saw Dombrowski being stabbed repeatedly.
Police responded and found Dombrowski, who was semi- conscious. He was taken to Doyne Hospital in Wauwatosa, where he was pronounced dead at 7:05 a.m.
By daylight, police returned to the tavern to investigate and found a trail of blood, which led them one block east into Milwaukee to a home in the 1400 block of S. 38th St. There, police spoke a resident who identified the suspect, Oldenburg said.
Police said the suspect was arrested about 9:30 a.m. in the Milwaukee County Safety Building. He had gone to the Milwaukee County district attorney's office Tuesday morning with someone who apparently was filing a domestic violence complaint there.
