Racism creeps into reporting
Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Sep 25, 2005
The other night, Sandra Yi was reporting on a shooting of a young Hispanic male on KSL-TV. I was disturbed to hear her ask if the incident had "gang involvement." If the boy's name had been "Smith" instead of "Martinez," I imagine the question would never have been asked. Indeed, there had been no evidence that gangs were involved, and his family was nearby, distraught. As a Hispanic professional, I am sorely disappointed at the racism that creeps into reporting, propagating the impression to the audience that all Hispanics must be considered gang members.
