5 felonies counts filed in carjacking and chase
Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Feb 16, 2005
The man accused of leading police for more than an hour on a low- speed chase Feb. 9 now finds himself charged with five felonies.
When a Logan man and his girlfriend went to Salt Lake City to buy a stereo, they met Anousak Kaykeo, 27, and his cohorts, who directed the couple to follow Kaykeo, driving a stolen car, according to court documents.
Kaykeo drove into an alley, blocking the Logan man's car. The couple were then forced out of their car at gunpoint while another man demanded the Logan man's money and cell phone, the charges state.
Kaykeo then put a gun to the Logan man's head, ordered him to his knees and left with the man's car, money and cell phone with the three other men, documents say. A police officer spotted Kaykeo driving near 419 S. 700 East, began to follow, and Kaykeo accelerated above the speed limit. Thus, the chase from Salt Lake to Davis County and back began, according to the court documents.
Officers spiked the car's tires, but the driver continued on the rims.
Kaykeo admitted, after being read his rights, that he stole the car he was driving in Bountiful because the car's key was in it. He also told police he was present during the earlier carjacking, the documents state.
He was charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with first-degree felony aggravated robbery; obstructing justice and receiving a stolen motor vehicle, both second-degree felonies; and failure to respond to an officer's signal to stop and restricted firearm possession, both third-degree felonies.
If convicted he could receive a five-years-to-life prison sentence and a $30,000 fine.
