'Achievers under 40' profile: Barry Murphy Jr.

Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City),  May 18, 2006  by Journal Record Staff

Title: Managing director

Company: Ronin Development

Birth date: Sept. 16, 1970

After selling his Boston-based financial services company in August 2004, Barry Murphy relocated to Oklahoma City where he started Ronin Development, a business focusing on commercial real estate development and brokerage.

My father is an entrepreneur and from an early age he drilled into me the benefits of owning a business, said Murphy, who has been self-employed since he graduated from Brown University in 1994.

For 10 years prior to founding Ronin Development, Murphy was president of Barry Murphy & Co., a Boston-based institutional securities brokerage firm. BMCI provided brokerage and execution services to more than 5,000 institutional and retail clients in the U.S. and 10 foreign countries. The company also provided institutional research to mutual funds, professional asset management firms and hedge funds.

In addition to providing commercial and industrial real estate brokerage services, Ronin Development is unique in that it guides its clients, should they decide to build their own facility, through a comprehensive design and build process. We enable our clients to stay focused on their core competencies, instead of trying to manage a sometimes complex real estate/construction transaction that is outside of what they typically do on a day-to-day basis. The company has worked with several firms throughout the U.S. and Canada in expanding their business locations in the Oklahoma City area.

Murphy is currently pursuing his MBA with a concentration in entrepreneurial studies from the F.W. Olin School of Management at Babson College in Massachusetts. He was recently appointed to serve as a board member on the City of Oklahoma City Bond Advisory Committee. He also serves as a director of the Oklahoma City Port Authority.

He and his wife, Lee, and 2-year-old son, Jackson, live in Oklahoma City.
