St. Anthony, American Stroke Association host 'A Stroke of Courage'

Stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the country, and it has long-range effects on employers and the workforce.
May is national stroke awareness month, and St. Anthony Hospital Rehabilitation Center and the American Stroke Association will host A Stroke of Courage, a conference presented from 8:30 to 3 p.m. May 19 at Will Rogers Theatre, NW 43rd Street and N. Western Avenue.
Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroscientist and stroke survivor, will present My Stroke of Insight into the Beauty and Resiliency of the Human Brain. Taylor will speak of her experiences as a stroke victim and as a neuroscientist at the Harvard Brain Tissue Resource Center and adjunct professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

A stroke occurs every 53 seconds in the United States. For workers over the age of 55, the chance for a stroke doubles every 10 years.
Taylor suffered an arterio-venous malformation - a rare form of stroke - in 1996 at the age of 37.
St. Anthony physician David J. Karasek will present A Day in the Life and discuss the first day of stroke survival and recovery.
Jeffrey Saffitz of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis will latest in diagnosis and treatment of stroke.
