- Roy released after arrest on domestic violence charges --- Patrick Roy was arrested early Sunday in Greenwood Village, Colo., on investigation of domestic violence charges, days after he set the career record for victories by an NHL goalie. Roy, who had also been held on criminal mischief charges, was released on $750 bail, said Arapahoe County sherrif's Lt. Steve Keller. Officers responded to a "911 hangup call" early Sunday at Roy's residence, police said in a news release. The officers spoke with Roy and his wife and were told there had been an argument, police said. Police said there was physical damage done to the home, and as a result of their findings Roy was taken into custody.

- Topeka team captures senior men's title --- A Topeka team won the USA League Tennis 4.5 men's senior national championship on Sunday in Palm Springs, Calif. Topeka beat Mesa, Ariz., 2-1 in the semifinals before team captain Don Gordy and Topekans Jerry Glidewell, Robert Keeshan, Mark Nordstrom and Berry Wanless helped knock out Nampa, Idaho, 2-1 in the championship match.

- Davenport ends Venus Williams streak --- Lindsay Davenport ended Venus Williams' 35-match winning streak on Sunday, a run that lasted more than four months, going back to the French Open. "One loss after 35 wins is not that bad," Williams said after the 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 defeat in the final of the $535,000 Generali Ladies Open in Linz, Austria. "I have only lost four matches this year." Davenport, who had struggled of late against Williams, said she had not thought much about the streak. "She's had a great run," she said.

- Shaughnessy wins Heineken; men's final suspended --- Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States won the $140,000 Heineken Open on Sunday in Shanghai, China, waiting out a rain delay and beating Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan 7-6 (2), 7-5. But rain halted the men's final between defending champion Magnus Norman of Sweden and Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands. Norman won the first set 6-4 and Schalken took the second by the same score.

- Corretja beats Moya for Toulouse title --- Alex Corretja defeated Carlos Moya 6-3, 6-2 on Sunday in the $400,000 final of the Toulouse Open in France.

General

- ESU finishes in middle of MIAA cross country pack --- Emporia State finished fourth in the women's and fifth in the men's MIAA cross country championships on Saturday in Emporia. Freshman Jason Dolan of Topeka helped the Hornets men's team with a 35th-place finish. Missouri Southern and Truman State won the men's and women's titles, respectively.

- Golota remains in hospital after Tyson loss --- Andrew Golota remained hospitalized Sunday after suffering a concussion and a neck injury in his fight against Mike Tyson, which he refused to continue after the second round. Golota was taken by his wife, Mariola, to Resurrection Medical Center on Chicago's Northwest side after they returned home Saturday morning from Friday night's fight at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan.

- Boxer in coma following fight --- A featherweight boxer who collapsed after a 10-round fight was in a coma and in critical condition Sunday following brain surgery. Robert Benson, 26, of Saugus, Mass., who competes under the ring name Bobby Tomasello, had just fought Steve Potse of Ghana to a 10-round draw Friday night in Boston when he collapsed in his dressing room.

- Khannouchi sets American marathon record --- Khalid Khannouchi set a U.S. record on Sunday, winning the Chicago Marathon in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 1 second. Catherine Ndereba of Kenya, the Boston Marathon champion, won the women's race in 2:21:33.

- U.S. swimmers dominate at Paralympics --- Swimmer Jason Wening completed a triple at the Paralympics on Sunday in Sydney, Australia, winning his third consecutive gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle by breaking his own world record. Two other U.S. swimmers took gold with world records Sunday --- Stephanie Brooks, of Alpharetta, Ga., and Lauren Reynolds, of Basking Ridge, N.J. Both marks came in separate categories of the 400-meter freestyle.
