Attarian out with broken foot

Oakland Tribune,  May 7, 2008  by Phil Jensen

Dublin High track star James Attarian will not be competing in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League championships this week due to a broken foot, he confirmed Tuesday.

Attarian broke the fifth metatarsal of his left foot while stepping on the inside rail to avoid a fallen competitor in the mile run at the Stanford Invitational on April 5. He proceeded to a victory in 4 minutes, 15.76 seconds, a time which converted to 1,600 meters (4:14.27) is sixth in the state by DyeStatCal.com.

Attarian competed in two more meets, finishing third in the boys invitational mile at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational, before he realized that his foot was broken, he said. He then went to see a doctor, and he found out about the injury.

"When I found out it was broken, I was disappointed. It isn't something you want in the middle of your season," he said. "I can't run on it ... I just found out today I have to wait another two-and- a-half (weeks). The doctor said that in another two-and-a-half weeks, it should be good."

Attarian said that Dublin coach Mike Goldstein is presenting Attarian's hardship case to the DFAL to see if Attarian can hardship through the DFAL championship meet.

BOYS GOLF

Mat Miller has made the most of the past 30 days. The Foothill High senior has fired a 5-under, a 6-under and two 1-under rounds over the last four weeks, and Saturday it paid off.

Miller signed with USF on Saturday, turning down an offer from St. Mary's. Cal also showed interest in Miller.

"I talked with USF for a while," Miller said. "It's a nice campus, and some of their home courses are Olympic and Lake Merced."

The second Foothill golfer to sign a Division I scholarship, Miller started the 30-day period with a second-place finish at the Champions Invitational at the Golf Club at Terra Lago in Indio. Miller shot a three-round total of 6-under-par 210, including a 5- under-par 67 in the final round. He led the Falcons to a third- place finish in the 36-team event.
