Logan wakes up, wins thriller
Oakland Tribune, May 7, 2008 by Steve R Waterhouse
FREMONT -- The James Logan High boys volleyball team's season could easily have ended Tuesday evening.
The Colts were down 2-0 in the semifinals of the Mission Valley Athletic League playoffs against Moreau Catholic at Washington. They had no momentum and seemed to have no life left.
And all of a sudden, the No.2-seeded Colts woke up. They reeled off three straight wins to claim a thrilling 18-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25- 23, 20-18 victory over the No.3 Mariners.
"I don't think it hit them that they were in the playoffs, and it was win or go home," said Logan assistant coach Bryant Tran, filling in for head coach Mike Solteau, who had a conflict with a school class and couldn't attend the match. "After the third game, we backed off the ropes. They went from scared to confident."
Moreau and Logan split matches in the MVAL season, and with this loss Moreau's season ends. The defending North Coast Section Division IV champions went 6-4 in league.
Logan will face top-seeded Washington in the championship match at 7 p.m Thursday at Washington. The Huskies were 10-0 in MVAL action with a pair of wins over the Colts.
"A lot of defense," Tran said of what it takes to beat a Washington team that is 21-5 overall. "Defense and blocks because Washington plays well as a team."
After back-to-back sluggish games to start, Logan stormed back from a 7-1 deficit in the third game to tie it 8-8, and eventually took control of the game with a 7-1 run to take a 15-9 lead.
Logan's Minh Ngo, who had a match-high 38 assists, gave Logan an 11-9 lead in the fifth and deciding game. But the Mariners wouldn't go away quietly. They staved off elimination when they were down 14- 10 with four straight points. They even took a 16-15 lead at one point.
But the momentum that Moreau had in the beginning of the match had completely turned, and Logan would get a kill from Aniq Masood, one of his match-high 22 kills, to finish off the fifth game.
Washington d. Mission
FREMONT -- In the other semifinal, No.1 Washington beat No.4 Mission San Jose 25-12, 25-22, 23-25, 25-10.
Washington, which won the regular-season title with a 10-0 mark, got a stellar performance from Abhinav Janghala, who had 21 kills and 11 blocks. Jonathan Kim had eight kills and 17 digs.
For Mission, Victor Chen had 32 assists.
BOYS TENNIS
SAN FRANCISCO -- No. 9-seeded Mission San Jose pulled off a 5-2 upset win over No.8 University of San Francisco in the first round of the NCS Team Tennis Championships at San Francisco State University.
The reward?
A quarterfinal match against top-seeded Redwood (20-1) Thursday at the Harbor Point Tennis Club in Mill Valley at 4 p.m.
"This team is hungry to go out and face the No.1 seed," Mission's first-year coach Bill Patton said. "The message is that if you want to play on that stage, these are the people you need to be playing. This will be a good measuring stick."
Mission's No.1 singles player Stephen Yu, who won the MVAL singles title a little over a week ago, set the tone Tuesday with a 6-0, 6-1 win over David Scheniker.
All of Mission's wins came in straight sets.
The No.1 doubles team of Kyle Richter and Andrew Sutedja posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Dan Rayant and T.J. Koblenz.
