Local Dem gets committee seat

Oakland Tribune,  Apr 25, 2008  by Anonymous

SACRAMENTO -- State Sen. Ellen Corbett, D-San Leandro, has been appointed to the Senate's environmental quality committee, her office announced Wednesday.

As a member of the committee, she will now review bills relating to such environmental issues as air quality, water quality, waste management, toxic materials and hazardous waste.

"Protecting the environment is one of my highest priorities, and I am enthusiastic for the opportunity to be even more directly involved in developing public policy for the benefit of all Californians," Corbett said in a statement.

Corbett already has introduced Senate Bill 1313, which would ban perflourinated chemicals, or PFCs, in food packaging that are linked in animal tests to cancer or reproductive harm, and urge manufacturers to use safe alternatives.

In addition to serving on the environmental quality committee, Corbett is chairwoman of the Senate judiciary committee and a member of the transportation and housing, appropriations, business and professions, and ethics committees.
