Moreau wraps up tennis title

Oakland Tribune,  Apr 22, 2008  by Anonymous

HAYWARD -- The Moreau Catholic High boys tennis team took down rival Castro Valley 4-3 on Monday to clinch the Hayward Area Athletic League title and the league's automatic North Coast Section berth for the second straight season.

Last year Moreau had to settle for a split with the Trojans, but the Mariners claim the league title outright after knocking off Castro Valley for the second time.

Moreau was powered by its singles play, including defending HAAL champion Mark De Castro. The No.1 player kept his unbeaten streak alive with a straight-sets victory over Castro Valley's Jake Pawid.

Moreau won all four singles matches in straight sets. The most intriguing match of Monday afternoon came in No.1 doubles. Castro Valley's Cliff Ching and Lucas Chang won a three-set battle over Ian McAvoy and Brad Shein.

Ching and Chang breezed through the first set with a 6-0 victory, but McAvoy and Shein refused to go down easily, rallying to win the second set 6-3. Right back came Ching and Chang to pull out the decisive third set, 6-4. That was one of three doubles victories for Castro Valley.

The Mariners will wrap up league play Wednesday with Bishop O'Dowd before the HAAL championships begin on Friday and conclude Saturday at Hidden Hills.
