Man in postal uniform robs Union City bank

Oakland Tribune,  Apr 18, 2008  by Ben Aguirre

UNION CITY _ Police this morning were looking for a man who robbed a bank earlier in the day while wearing an outfit similar to that of a postal delivery man.

Dozens of Union City officers, a Milpitas police search dog, and an East Bay Regional Parks Department helicopter scoured a neighborhood the area near Bank of the West, 33301 Alvarado-Niles Road, for about two hours but could not find the assailant, said Sgt. Raul Galindo.

The robber walked into the bank about 9:30 a.m., said he had a gun _ although one was not seen _ and demanded money from the clerk, Galindo said. He then grabbed an undisclosed amount of money and fled into the area of Central Avenue and Condor drive, west of the bank.

Police immediately set up a perimeter in the neighborhood and conducted yard-to-yard searches but called off the search about 11:45 a.m.

The robber was described as a black man who stood about 5 feet 7 inches tall and appeared to be about 20 to 30 years old. He had black hair, black eyes and wore what police described only as ``a uniform similar to that of a postal delivery person,'' Galindo said.

Anyone with information may call police at 510-471-1365.
