Package rendered safe, evacuation lifted in Union City
Oakland Tribune, Apr 15, 2008 by Ben Aguirre Jr
UNION CITY - A suspicious package that caused a part of Union City City Hall to be evacuated for about an hour this morning has been determined to be a harmless children's backpack, authorities said.
The backpack was found stuck to the undercarriage of a Union City police patrol car about 11 a.m., and prompted police to evacuate a portion of City Hall, and close one street near the police department, Lt. Jim Bizieff said.
The Alameda County Bomb Squad was summoned to the building's parking lot, and about noon determined that the package was anything by suspicious.
``It looks like the officer may have ran over (the backpack) in the street and didn't know,'' said Bizieff, spokesman for the police department.
Royal Ann Drive between Arizona Street and Alvarado-Niles Road was closed for about 40 minutes, but has since been re-opened.
