$8M will help build school facilities

Oakland Tribune,  Apr 4, 2008  by Kristofer Noceda

SAN LEANDRO -- The school district will receive

$8 million from the state to augment Measure B funding designed to build and improve district buildings.

The additional windfall comes from Proposition 1D, a state bond passed by voters in November 2006 to revamp public schools, and will go toward enhancing career technical education facilities in San Leandro Unified School District.

"We are thrilled by the news," Superintendent Christine Lim said in a statement. "With this funding, our students and the community will benefit even more." Proposition 1D generated $10.4 billion to repair and upgrade public schools. One billion of the budget is reserved for funding CTE facilities.

Lim said the district submitted five applications of district projects to be funded by the state, and the California Department of Education accepted and agreed to the district's requests.

The funding dovetails with some of the district's plans to revamp its facilities under the $109 million Measure B school bond, also passed by voters in 2006.

The measure was designed to alleviate overcrowding issues at San Leandro High, while also updating district facilities. In addition, the industrial arts building -- now part of CTE -- is to be renovated with bond dollars.
