Pleasanton baby in critical condition

Oakland Tribune,  Apr 1, 2008  by Meera Pal

OAKLAND -- A 9-month-old Pleasanton boy remains in critical condition today after being airlifted to Children's Hospital Oakland on Saturday with severe head trauma, Pleasanton police Detective Dirk Hooper said.

Hooper said detectives are investigating whether the cause of the injury was accidental or criminal and have made no arrests, he said.

The infant, who was brought to ValleyCare Medical Center at 4:25 p.m. Saturday by his adult babysitter, underwent surgery for bleeding in the brain, Hooper said.

Detectives are not releasing many details, but said the baby sitter had experience tending to the baby before.

The woman took the baby to the ValleyCare emergency room, and police were called after the infant began vomiting and became unresponsive. Doctors determined the child had suffered head trauma, and he was sent to Oakland.

Detectives have interviewed the baby sitter and the child's parents, and the incident remains under investigation.
