Rig blocking city street near San Pablo after rolling off I-80
Oakland Tribune, Mar 19, 2008 by Robert Salonga
SAN PABLO - One direction of El Portal Drive remains blocked after a big rig tumbled off eastbound Interstate 80 and into city streets early this morning, the California Highway Patrol said.
The rig went off the freeway and tumbled down an embankment around 4:20 a.m., the CHP said. The driver suffered moderate to major injuries and was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.
The southbound direction of El Portal Drive as well as the adjacent freeway offramp are still closed, and an estimate for when it will re-open was not available. The CHP re-opened northbound lanes around 5:30 a.m.
A cause for the crash has not been determined.
