Armed robbery duo get clothing and run

Oakland Tribune,  Mar 19, 2008  by Ben Aguirre Jr

FREMONT -- What do you do when you're getting robbed at gunpoint?

One clerk called her manager -- using the store's overhead intercom system.

Her call sent two robbers fleeing from the Ross store in The Hub shopping center with pairs of bluejeans and other clothing they'd selected from the racks.

The men, one of whom is believed to be at least 40 years old, entered the store about 9 p.m. Monday. About 15 minutes later, the men went to the checkstand as if they were going to pay for the items, Detective Bill Veteran said.

But instead of pulling out his wallet, one of the men showed a handgun and demanded money from the register, the detective said.

The clerk told the pair that she could not open the till and then used the store's intercom system to call for a manager, Veteran said.

Frustrated by the clerk's actions, the robbers fled with arms full of clothing.

The armed robber was described as a 28- to 35-year-old black man about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds. He had a short goatee, tight cornrows and wore a dark-colored jacket, tan shirt and light-colored bluejeans that had a patch over one knee.

His accomplice was a forty-something black man about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 140 to 150 pounds. He wore a black baseball cap and a black jacket.
