County's homeless have team to help them

SAN LORENZO -- Beverly Cherkoff doesn't have a home beyond the van she parks at various sites around San Lorenzo. But that doesn't keep her from serving those less fortunate as a loyal volunteer of the community food pantry at Oromo Christ Lutheran Church on Hacienda Avenue.

"I'm strong and independent," said the 75-year-old. "And I care for these homeless people."

She is at the pantry during its operating hours from 10:30 a.m. to noon Mondays through Thursdays, and often comes in much earlier to keep the shelves stocked. Over the past six months, the number of families coming to the pantry has tripled to between 700 and 800 monthly.
