Business owner going to bat for sports, parks
Oakland Tribune, Mar 15, 2008 by Shaun Bishop
REDWOOD CITY -- A local restaurant owner is planning a St. Patrick's Day event, complete with corned beef and bagpipes to raise money for after-school sports and parks.
"I'm just trying to get the community out there, showing we're trying to build up Redwood City as the little entertainment hub," said Bill Murphy, owner of the Broadway Cocktail Lounge.
From 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, the street near the business at Winslow Avenue and Marshall Street will be filled with Irish dancers, bagpipers, drummers and a Celtic rock band.
For the $30 entrance fee, attendees will also get a plate of corned beef and cabbage.
All the proceeds raised above the event's costs -- which Murphy estimates at about
$6,000 -- will go to the Redwood City Police Activities League and the Parks and Recreation Department, he said. Murphy said he hopes to make it an annual event.
"Then next year, we'll talk about the parade," he said with a laugh.
