Nine to vie for Hayward council seats

Oakland Tribune,  Mar 13, 2008  by Matt O'Brien

HAYWARD -- Seven candidates are vying for four four-year seats on the Hayward City Council, according to documents filed with the City Clerk's office by the Wednesday election deadline.

Two additional candidates will compete for a two-year council seat.

The election is scheduled for

June 3.

And with incumbents Doris Rodriquez and Bill Ward not seeking re- election, voters will put at least two new faces on the seven- member body.

The race for the four-year seats pits incumbent council members Barbara Halliday, Olden Henson and Bill Quirk against each other and four challengers: pscyhotherapist Linda Bennett, retired county bureaucrat Marvin Peixoto, real estate broker Rob Simpson, and businessman and college instructor Francisco Zermeno.

Peixoto is a member of the Hayward Planning Commission, while Halliday, Henson, Bennett and Zermeno are all former planning commissioners.

In the race for the two-year seat, retired 9-1-1 dispatcher Steve Bristow will compete against real estate broker Anna May for the seat being vacated by Rodriquez.

In 2010, the two-year term -- part of a temporary system set up when Councilman Matt Jimenez died after being re-elected in 2006 -- reverts to a four-year term lasting until 2014.

Whomever holds the seat would have to run again.
