JOSEPHINE COOK LANE

October 10, 1919 to March 5, 2008

Passed away at Carlmont Gardens Convalescent Home in Belmont, California. Josephine was born in Redlands, California, to Dr. Joseph and Alice Cook. She had two older brothers, Joseph, Jr., and Edgar (Ned), and a younger sister, Alice. When Josephine was ten years old, her family moved to Persia (now Iran) where her father served as a Presbyterian missionary physician for the next three years until his death. The family then returned to Redlands where she graduated from Redlands High School. She attended one year of college at the University of Idaho, where she pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. During that year, Josephine met Gordon Lane and two years later, they married. She committed to a life of domestic engineering in support of their family, which was blessed with a son, Brandon. Due to her husband's business, she lived in several different cities in California, including Redlands, Carpinteria, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, and finally Lindsay, which was to be their permanent residence for thirty years. Wherever they lived, she opened her home to friends and relatives who were treated to wonderful hospitality, good food, and many memorable experiences. She and Gordon had a motor-home and loved to travel, mostly throughout the western U.S. They also loved dogs, and took them on all their trips. Josephine was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church, within which she served many roles. She remained interested in the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and was a member of the P.E.O. women's organization. She was an avid bridge player until her sight failed later in life. Due to Gordon's failing health, they moved from Lindsay to Cherry Hills retirement home near Riverside, California, where they resided for about two years. Following her husband's admittance in 1997 to an Alzheimer's care facility closer to their son, Josephine moved to Northern California to live with her sister, Alice, first in San Carlos, then in Redwood City. During her last several years she lived at Carlmont Gardens Convalescent Home in Belmont. Her wits and sense of humor persisted until the end, which made spending time with her so enjoyable. One of her most recent wishes was to be able to vote for John McCain. She cherished her extended family, especially two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her loving relationship with her sister and being a part of the Trinity Presbyterian Church family brought her special comfort. She leaves her sister Alice Bunker, son Brandon Lane (Bobbie), grandson Tim Lane, granddaughter Teddi Reed (Shane), great-grandson Jack Reed, and numerous generations of nieces and nephews.
