Manteca police seek shooting suspect

Oakland Tribune,  Mar 4, 2008  by Paul Burgarino

MANTECA -- Police are asking for the public's assistance in finding an attempted homicide suspect in connection with a June 2007 incident.

About 2 a.m. June 24, a

28-year-old Manteca resident was returning home from Leon's Bar and Billiards when he was attacked by several people in a white van.

The man was shot at least twice in the back and has since recovered, said Rex Osborn, a police spokesman. He said emergency surgery was performed at a local hospital to remove a bullet close to the victim's spine.

Using witness information and investigative leads, police said Monday they are trying to identify members of the band Grupo Illusion, which was playing at Leon's that evening.

The shooter is believed to be a Hispanic male in his 30s, about 5 feet 6 inches tall with a medium build and short, dark hair. He may be a band member, Osborn said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Ken Wells at 209-239-8406 or South County Crime Stoppers at 209-823-4636.
