Suspect surrenders in stabbing of cousin
Oakland Tribune, Mar 3, 2006 by Amy Yarbrough, STAFF WRITER
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO -- A man accused of stabbing his cousin in the heart during a fight early Thursday morning walked into the police station hours later and surrendered, authorities said.
The suspect, Daniel Quiles, 20, had been fighting with Jesse Quiles in front of the latter's house on the 100 block of Clay Avenue, authorities said. Around 1 a.m., someone called police, who discovered Jesse wounded, with Daniel nowhere to be found.
Daniel had run off after the stabbing, but called family members on his cell phone shortly after the incident, police said.
At 1:10 p.m., he walked into the South San Francisco police station and gave himself up.
A transient whose last known residence was in San Francisco, Daniel Quiles was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and booked into San Mateo County jail. Jesse Quiles, 24, was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
He remains in critical condition.
Investigators learned that the cousins had been feuding for some time, said Sgt. Jeff Azzopardi, Police Department spokesman.
"It seems like they have been having some family squabbles," he said.
Before the stabbing, Jesse had gone to the Clay Avenue home, where his sister lives, to confront Daniel because Daniel had been staying there, police said.
