Balanced running attack lifts castro valley to win

Oakland Tribune,  Oct 22, 2005  by Paul Doherty, CORRESPONDENT

CASTRO VALLEY -- Scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter, the Castro Valley High football team rolled to as 41-8 victory over Moreau Catholic in Hayward Area Athletic League game Friday.

With defending HAAL rushing champion running back Wesley Willis out for the season with a knee injury, the Trojans were forced to use a more balanced running attack.

Castro Valley's Parker Bugosh ran for 135 yards, while Justin Koscinski had 91 and Mitchell Levi added 46.

"We got two starting linemen back today (from injury)," Castro Valley coach Craig Nieves said. "And that really helped our running game."

Nieves described the Trojans' more balanced running attack as "running by committee."

Koscniski is happy to be shouldering the brunt of a the rushing offense, along with Bugosh, in Willis' absence.

"I'm capable of stepping up and filling Wes' shoes." Koscinski said.

Koscinski scored the Trojans' first touchdown, but later said that he didn't play his best game.

"I didn't eat right today and I went into the game feeling a little sick," he said. "I played sloppy, and that ball was popping up out of my hands like popcorn,"

Koscinski fumbled midway through the second quarter, which led to Moreau's only scoring drive.

Mariners sophomore quarterback Devon Saxon connected with senior wide receiver Sean Spoden for a 62-yard gain to the Trojans 3-yard line.

On the next play, Saxon scored on a quarterback sneak for the Mariners' only touchdown.

The Trojans scored once in the third quarter on Robert Panighetti's 15-yard run, and added two more fourth-quarter scores.

All of Castro Valley's touchdowns came on the ground, as the Trojans logged 394 rushing yards and 479 total yards.

Koscinski said he is happy to play a bigger role for the Trojans.

"I want to show (Willis) and the whole team that I'm here for them," Koscinski said.
