Life mimics art in local painting
Oakland Tribune, Oct 21, 2005
CURTIS and Stephanie Williams hosted a cocktail party to showcase the unveiling of a portrait of their daughter, Margaret. The exceptional twist to the portrait was that it was done in the style of an old master by local artist Geri Pruett. The old master painting, "Girl with the Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer, was replicated using Margaret's face.
That evening, Geri displayed other oil paintings that were part of her master's portfolio. The guests, friends and neighbors of the Williams family, including Frank and Kathy Zanger, John and Judi Garcia and Dean and Ingrid Meiktas enjoyed the wine, hors d'oeuvres and great company while taking in Geri's work. For family members Pat Phillips, Sheila Merrill, Cynthia Campbell, Judy Chatburn, Syd and Marguerite Williams and Kathy Simonson and Margaret's friends, Stephanie Venegas and Anna Dykzel, it was like having their own private gallery review.
Some of the paintings Geri brought that evening were part of her "Carnaval" theme. They included four Venetian masks, a portrait of a London street artist and a painting of Laughing Sal, from the fun house at Playland at the Beach.
Geri is the founder and original owner of the Village Crafters in Castro Valley. Several of her paintings are hanging in the store. She also teaches private painting classes and is finishing work on her master's degree in painting and fine art.
This year's annual meeting of the BWA (Boys Weekend Away) Brethren was held the weekend of Sept. 29. Bailey Creek at Lake Almanor was the location for this year's meeting. This marked the 20th anniversary of the brethren to meet and discusslife, health and prosperity. All of that discussion is good, but they always make time for a game or two of golf and fishing.
The guys are all graduates of Hayward High School. The Hayward High Class of 1973 graduates who attended this year included Scott Paulsen and Michael Engeldinger. Class of 1974 alumni included Scott Christiansen, Scott Clare, Dwight Roberts and Royce Valencia. This year's stars on the golf links were Paulsen with the low net score and Christiansen with the low gross, and an unbelievable lifetime career round of 75.
Salmon fishing on the Sacramento River the day before the BWA weekend also netted a good catch. Seven fish were caught; the largest, at 32 pounds, was caught by Clare. A trout-fishing tournament was held on the Department of Fish and Research Boat on Lake Almanor, with all members participating. The results, however, could not compare with the Sacramento River catch. The weekend was a huge success with everyone taking home happy memories to add to those of other annual BWA events.
