High-speed chase ends with arrests

OAKLAND -- A Pittsburg man drove a stolen car down the wrong side of Broadway on Thursday afternoon before Oakland police caught and arrested him and his passenger, an Oakland man, according to police.

Police said the 30-year-old driver and his

23-year-old passenger were arrested on Ocean View Drive about 6:30 p.m. Thursday on suspicion of car theft and attempted carjacking. Their names were not released.

Officers spotted the men in the stolen Toyota Camry in the 2000 block of 81st Avenue and followed them to Interstate 880, wherethey traveled at speeds up to 80 mph, police said.

The chase continued on Interstate 980 to Grand Avenue, where the men exited the freeway. At 27th and Broadway, the car crossed into the southbound lanes while headed northbound.

Patrol units backed off the chase when a police helicopter got involved. In the 6000 block of Margarido, in the Rockridge district, the men bailed out of the car and unsuccessfully tried to carjack another. They took off on foot and were arrested.
