Transient held in attack of Island woman

Oakland Tribune,  Oct 21, 2005  by ,

OAKLAND -- A transient apparently angry because a 73-year-old Alameda woman refused to give him money Thursday morning was arrested after beating and robbing her at a downtown ATM, police said.

The woman, whose name police did not release, was treated at the scene for cuts and bruises.

The attack happened about 9:15 a.m. at an ATM on the 400 block of 12th Street in City Center Plaza.

As the woman was getting some money from the ATM, the suspect, identified as Frederick Patterson, 23, began crowding her. She asked him to stand back, Officer James Morris said.

Some words were exchanged, then Patterson grabbed the cash the woman had just gotten, Morris said. She started struggling with him as Officer George Bonilla happened by.

Bonilla saw Patterson shove the woman against a tree and grab at her purse with one hand while hitting her repeatedly in the face with his other hand.

Bonilla said Patterson started running through the plaza with the woman's cash. He radioed for more officers, and within a few minutes Patterson was arrested in a nearby garage by motorcycle Officer Vinnie Johnson.

He did not have any of the cash with him and said he had thrown it away while running, Morris said.

The woman was brought to where Patterson was arrested and identified him as the man who robbed her, police said.

Patterson later admitted his involvement to Morris and Sgt. Dom Arotzarena, according to police. He told them he had spent the night at a friend's house after being turned away from a downtown shelter.

Arotzarena said Patterson explained he was angry because the woman refused to give him $5 that he needed for food and a bus pass to find somewhere to sleep.

"She didn't have any love in her heart for me so that's why I had no love in my heart and took her money, and I still don't regret it," Arotzarena quoted Patterson as saying.

He was arrested on suspicion of robbery, aggravated battery and elder abuse.

Police are looking at other reports to see if Patterson could be responsible for other strong-arm robberies downtown.
