Officals at Burlingame school listen to neighbors' concerns

BURLINGAME -- A public meeting Thursday night on plans to build a 180-square-foot storage space for Mercy High School's physical education building gave neighbors a chance to air out their grievances about traffic and parking issues that occur around the Catholic school.
The meeting, held in the Kohl Mansion cafeteria, was about the $750,000 project to upgrade the physical education building with new storage space, American with Disabilities Act-accessible restrooms and showers, and an improved weight room.
Other changes would include the replacement of a 200-seat bleachers in the pool area and improvements to landscaping and irrigation.
The building is at least 40 years old.
Mercy High, at 2750 Adeline Drive, is operated by the Sisters of Mercy. Right now, school officials are working to get a conditional- use permit for school use and the Kohl Mansion.
In May, the Burlingame Planning Commission held off on a vote to grant a permit after hearing from neighbors about speeding, traffic and parking concerns.
Some students have been known to park on residential streets instead of the school's parking lot, neighbors said at the Planning Commission meeting.
Commissioners asked the school to provide parking numbers for the school and for Kohl Mansion.
School officials will hold more neighborhood meetings to listen to residents' concerns before the issue goes back to the Planning Commission next year.
