Swirl, sip, repeat at Tracys wine stroll

Oakland Tribune,  Oct 21, 2005  by Mike Martinez, STAFF WRITER

TRACY -- Like the vintages being poured, the 17th Annual Downtown Tracy Wine Stroll is getting better with age.

This years event, which organizers are calling the largest ever, features more than 60 wines being offered by more than 60 downtown businesses, along with five live bands, and lots of food.

Bill Carey, owner of the Tracy Wine Cellar, said the stroll is featuring several wines from Livermore, Lodi, Tracy and Sonoma among the more than 3,000 bottles being served. Also offered are wines from Italy, France and Australia.

If someone gets a 1.5 oz. sample of every wine offered at the stroll Friday night, they might need some help when its over. Thats almost four bottles of wine.

I wouldnt suggest it and I dont recommend it, Carey said. You really have to pick and choose the wines you like.

Downtown businesses will be serving merlots, zinfandels, Cabernet, and Chardonnay in specially ordered glasses for the stroll.

Carey said last year he sold about five cases of the tasting glasses and this year, with more downtown merchants selling glasses, he could go through 10 cases if the pace of purchase keeps up. Organizers also ordered 3,156 bottles of wine, about 100 more than last year.

Cheryl Milligan of Stockton has been attending the stroll for several years. She likes seeing familiar faces every year and enjoys tasting the red zinfandels with her husband.

We moved out of town and still keep coming back to it, Milligan said.

Before tasting, Carey recommends watching for bright reds or clear whites.

When smelling the red wines, you may get an olfactory medley of strawberries, raspberries and black cherries. White wines may offer aromas of peaches, pears and apples.
