Moreau romps past Tennyson

Oakland Tribune,  Oct 21, 2005  by Michael Bower, STAFF WRITER

HAYWARD -- The Moreau Catholic girls volleyball team continued to hold third place in the Hayward Area Athletic League on Thursday.

The Mariners won their third straight HAAL match, 25-7, 25-8, 25- 14 over visiting Tennyson.

The Mariners moved to 8-3 in the HAAL and are trailing rival Castro Valley (9-1) and undefeated Bishop O'Dowd (10-0). Arroyo is at 7-3.

"We have a really young team, but we are starting to find our groove," Mariners coach Barbara Klews said.

The Mariners passed the ball well in all three games. Devin Scully had nine assists, feeding mostly Stephanie Phelan who had three kills to go along with four aces.

"We have been working really hard on our passing," Klews said.

The Lancers tried to crawl back into the third game trailing 11- 5. Sophomore Sherelle Porter served five straight points to pull the Lancers within 11-10. But Phelan ended the streak, smashing a kill.

"We are a really young team," Lancers' coach Jennifer Munkelt said. "The entire varsity team except for one graduated last year."

Munkelt said the team has three seniors starting for the first time.

The Mariners pushed the score to 13-10 before the Lancers made another run, cutting the lead to 13-12 with a kill from Leslie Palaroan.

But the Mariners proved to be too much. They went on a 12-2 run to close out the match. Phelan served the last nine points for the Mariners in the 25-14 win.

Porter, a sophomore, finished the match with four aces and three digs for the Lancers.

"The girls played really hard," Munkelt said.

The Mariners opened the match with a 25-7 win over the Lancers. Simone Sagapolu led the way in the first game with 12 aces and nine assists. The Mariners rolled to a 25-8 win the second game.

The Lancers are still searching for their first win of the season, moving to 0-10 with the loss. Therese Tiongquico posted five digs and Maria Arella chipped in 13 assists for the Lancers.
