Voigtlander takes third to cap tough week

Oakland Tribune,  Oct 21, 2005  by Michael Chu, CORRESPONDENT

BELMONT -- While running along the 2.95-mile Crystal Springs course, Burlingame's Katie Voigtlander had things besides the race on her mind.

Voigtlander has been preoccupied with college essays during the week, which brought back memories of her late mother, who passed away her freshman year.

Despite her heavy heart and increasingly heavy legs, Voigtlander placed third in the varsity girls race at the second Crystal Springs Center Meet.

"I was a little emotionally drained today," said Voigtlander, who finished with a time of 18:56, 30 seconds behind first place. "My head wasn't in the race."

Voigtlander said the meet was her first with the team after running as an individual in five previous meets.

"Katie probably wasn't pleased with her time, but she was probably pleased with her placement," said Burlingame assistant coach Frank Hunt.

The girls meet was close through the first two miles before it started to spread out with Live Oak's Cobbie Jones pulling away, finishing first in 18:26. Terra Nova's Gina Detmer placed sixth.

At the start of the boys meet, the lead group set a blistering pace in the first mile before slowing.

Terra Nova's Andrew Kohnert placed second in 15:43, one second behind meet winner Kevin Schneider of Fremont.

"I was shooting for under 16 minutes, and I did it," Kohnert said. "Now, I can shoot for below 15:30."

With the fast start, Kohnert said he just tried to stay with the leaders in the first mile, then worked his way up to second place through the second mile and maintained a steady, consistent pace for the rest of the race.

Burlingame also had a strong race from their boys team. Monte Keleher finished ninth in 16:20, and Joe Johnston 13th in 16:34. Aragon's Zack Crockett finished sixth with a time of 16:12.

"I think they ran well," Hunt said. "The younger athletes are running better. Everybody is performing well up to this point in the season."
