Sierra captures girls tennis win
Oakland Tribune, Oct 21, 2005 by STAFF REPORT
CERES -- With the Sierra High girls tennis team having already secured a victory with eight team points, coaches decided following a serious injury to a Central Valley player to end the match at Ceres High early on Thursday, agreeing to an official 8-0 Timberwolves victory.
It was unclear who was the Central Valley player taken from the Ceres High tennis courts by ambulance.
Sierra's Erica Bennett beat Amanda Diaz 6-3 at No. 1 singles. She was tied with Jessica Gutierrez 6-6 when the match was terminated. Sierra's other singles players, Katie Lam and Vinh Nguyen, each won two matches and had a third canceled.
Justine Gallindo and Nicole Vanni won their first match, and Dana Heupeland and Michelle Weiler won one before their second match was cut short.
Lodi 3, Tracy 2
TRACY -- When you're talking about playing Lodi in tennis, you're looking for moral victories.
And Tracy (6-8) earned a pair on Thursday. Amanda Torretto and Laila Rahimi-Keshari survived a first-set loss to knock off Courtney Bingham and Noelle Anderson at No. 1 doubles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
At No. 3 singles, Corrin Geibig won for the second straight day, topping Tessa Fraser 6-4, 6-3.
"Corrin played well this week," Tracy coach Paul Demsher said. "(This win) was a little bit of a surprise. She's serving well and playing with consistent ground strokes. She really played a strong match. She played a girl who beat my No. 2 a week ago, badly."
Lodi improved to 14-0 with the win.
Tokay 4, West 1
TRACY -- A makeup match on Wednesday left West playing Tokay two days in a row, and the result -- even the score -- was the same both days.
In Thursday's rematch, Beatriz Ramirez and Cherie Romualdo earned the Wolf Pack's lone victory at No. 2 doubles, while Tami Estrada played the most competitive singles match.
Estrada beat Lauren Ishii -- who won Wednesday's match in straight sets -- in the first set, 6-2, before dropping the next two, 6-3, 6-4.
VOLLEYBALL
West 3, Edison 0
STOCKTON -- Katie Johnson had seven kills, Amy Arias added six, and Kylin Ellison finished with five kills, five aces, eight assists and two digs for the Wolf Pack in a 25-12, 25-12, 25-10 win.
