Cal's second-in- command stepping down to teach

Oakland Tribune,  Oct 21, 2005  by ,

The second-highest administrator at the University of California, Berkeley, will step down at the end of the academic year and return to teaching, officials announced recently.

Paul Gray, 62, who has been executive vice chancellor and provost since 2000, will give up these posts on July 1 to become a teacher and researcher in the College of Engineering.

In a statement, Gray said he's proud of campus efforts to recruit top-notch administrators, improve the undergraduate experience and recruit and retain top faculty.

Before becoming provost, Gray was dean of the College of Engineering from 1996 to 2000 and was chairman of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from 1990 to 1993.
