Parents see life through teens eyes

Oakland Tribune,  Oct 20, 2005  by Lea Blevins, STAFF WRITER

PLEASANTON -- Parents have an upcoming opportunity to learn more about dealing with their teenage children.

Amador Valley Adult and Community Education is offering a class on Saturday called, Compassionate Parenting with Your Teens.

Instructor Beth Halbert, a child psychologist, speaker, author and songwriter, will talk to parents about unique approaches to dealing with the challenges of adolescence.

Its a very practical, very nurturing approach, and I think that shes a very good facilitator, said Pnina Tobin, chairwoman of the parent education department.

This is the first time Pleasanton has offered this workshop, which is open to both parents and teenagers.

Topics will include how to allow teenagers to experience the natural consequences of their words and actions, how to show teenagers empathy as they experience growing pains and how to see life through their eyes.

Tobin said parents can never be too prepared when it comes to their children.

You can always learn to do things better, she said.

The class is free and open to the public, including people who dont live in Pleasanton. It will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the multipurpose room at Harvest Park Middle School, 4900 Valley Ave., Pleasanton.

Amador Valley Adult and Community Education also has other parenting classes this month, including Positive Discipline Strategies, Part Two from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight in the library at Valley View Elementary School, 480 Adams Way, Pleasanton.
