Merced Cougars overwhelm JV

Oakland Tribune,  Oct 19, 2005  by STAFF REPORT

MANTECA -- The Manteca Jaguars took a 7-6 lead on a 69-yard pass from T.J. Gordon to Kelvron Hardrict but did not score again until late in the fourth quarter of a 46-14 junior varsity Cen Cal loss to the Merced Cougars at Guss Schmiedt Field.

"The Cougars overwhelmed us on special teams," Manteca coach Bill Kiser said. "They racked up over 200 yards on returns."

Spencer Bell (six carries, 130 yards) was nearly caught for a safety late in the game and was able to escape that danger and ramble 98 yards for the game's final touchdown. Gordon completed 2- of-6 passes for 75 yards.

Joe Trout made 10 tackles for the Jaguars, Bell five and Na'im McGee and Eric Pomeroy four apiece.

Jonathon Montoya racked up 224 yards on 10 carries with four touchdowns for Manteca.

"Montoya was the story," Manteca coach Bill Dixon said. "But the offensive line won the battle in the trenches to allow Montoya to run free."

Montoya scored on runs of 38, 40, 44 and 50 yards and recovered a fumble. Daniel Ramos made five tackles, Jalen Alejandro four, and Khashari Nguyen recovered a fumble.
