13-year-old arrested in SUV joy ride

Oakland Tribune,  Oct 19, 2005  by Amy Yarbrough, STAFF WRITER

COLMA -- A 13-year-old's joy ride turned out to be not so joyous after he was arrested on suspicion of stealing a luxury SUV from a dealership, police said.

Employees at the Colma GMC/Pontiac dealership on Serramonte Boulevard called 9-1-1 just after 11 a.m., after the teen drove a Cadillac Escalade off of their lot, said Colma police Sgt. Colm Quinn.

Initially, the employees thought the boy was 16 or 17. Police only discovered he was 13 after tracking down his parents.

The employees told police the boy had walked onto the showroom floor and grabbed the keys off a hook to a black 2002 Cadillac Escalade. They last saw him and the SUV headed west on Serramonte Boulevard toward Interstate 280.

When officers arrived at the dealership, employees remembered they had seen the boy there Saturday, when he came in with some relatives to look at other cars, Quinn said.

Using that information, police called officers at San Francisco's Bayview station, and the boy was arrested at his Bayview-Hunters Point home. The SUV was found undamaged.

"It was very quick. He was already arriving as we were talking with San Francisco police," Quinn said.

The boy was arrested on suspicion of stealing the SUV and driving without a license. His case will be reviewed by San Mateo County Juvenile Probation.
