Former Village People member pleads not guilty to felony raps

Oakland Tribune,  Aug 26, 2005  by FROM STAFF REPORTS

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO -- The original cop in the 1970s musical group The Village People pleaded not guilty to felony drug and weapons charges Wednesday in a San Mateo County courtroom.

Victor Edward Willis, 54, who co-authored such hits as "Macho Man" and "YMCA," has been free on bail since he was arrested during a traffic stop

in July.

A Daly City resident on probation, Willis has been charged with six felony counts related to possession of cocaine and a

.45-caliber gun, presenting police with a forged document and impersonating his brother to officers.

He is further charged with a misdemeanor count of driving with a suspended license.

Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said Willis' attorney is petitioning the court to award the former singer drug treatment in lieu of jail time.
