Dame Helen Mirren has long been fascinated by her Russian ancestry, and here she stars in a drama about her own grandfather, Pyotr Mironov, a Tsarist officer who lost home, family, native land, language, career and social standing on being exiled to Britain after the Revolution. Mirren plays the part of Lena, the sister to whom Pyotr was closest, who, despite being evicted from the family estate, remained in Russia after 1917. Through her letters, Lena and her sisters describe to their distant brother the hardships of their new life in Moscow.
