DISCS: JAZZ HHHII Joey DeFrancesco Legacy CONCORD

Independent on Sunday, The,  May 15, 2005  by Sholto Byrnes

Just before he died this year, Jimmy Smith, the king of the Hammond organ, recorded with the dauphin he had blessed as the 'second best' (after himself), Joey DeFrancesco. Such efforts can often be embarrassing, with the younger man overawed by the presence of a master who may well be past it, but energetic support from Joey D (on piano as well as Hammond) and the excellent sidemen sparked Smith into a performance belying his 79 years.

'Those old funky beats,' as another organist, Booker T Jones, once put it, were still there to the end.
