Two 'Independent on Sunday' journalists receive top honours

Independent on Sunday, The,  May 15, 2005

Two journalists from 'The Independent on Sunday' have received top honours in prestigious award ceremonies. Patrick Cockburn has been named winner of the Martha Gellhorn Award for Journalism, given in honour of the great war correspondent and humanitarian.

The citation reads: 'The Martha Gellhorn Award is given every year to a journalist whose work has penetrated the established version of events and told unpalatable truths, validated by powerful facts ...The work of Patrick Cockburn fits this description perfectly ... The reporting of Iraq has not been journalism's finest hour, which makes the honourable exceptions, like Patrick Cockburn, all the more vital to the public's right to know. He is the antithesis of the 'embedded' reporter. Often at great personal risk, his outstanding eyewitness and analytical journalism, drawing on a true understanding of historical Iraq and its people, has consistently made sense of the bloody invasion and occupation.'

And at the Glenfiddich Awards on Monday, Terry Durack, also of 'The Independent on Sunday', was named Restaurant Critic of the Year. Christopher Hirst and Anthony Rose of 'The Independent' also won awards.

They come as new audited figures last week showed the circulation of 'The Independent on Sunday' continuing to rise. The paper's circulation increased to 210,198 in April.
