Organic beauty rip-off caution

Independent on Sunday, The,  Sep 2, 2007

By Susie Mesure

Eco-minded shoppers who feel ripped off on discovering that their newly purchased organic cosmetics barely contain any organic ingredients should prepare for further disappointment. Despite more interest than ever from consumers in the organic health and beauty industry, the Government has no plans to clamp down on companies attempting to pass off their goods as more organic than they are.

Helen Taylor, the marketing director at The Soil Association, warned that it would be least another decade before the Government introduced measures to clear up the confusion.

Organic cosmetics - the fastest growing sector of the organic industry - is a self-regulated industry that is confused by numerous certification schemes.
