Paul MacCready, the "father of human-powered flight" whose 70lb Albatross was the first such vehicle to cross the Channel, died on Tuesday aged 81.

Galina Dzhugashvili, the beloved granddaughter of Joseph Stalin whom she described as a good grandfather, died in Moscow on Monday aged 69.

Gaston Thorn, the former premier of Luxembourg who grew up fighting the Nazi occupation of his homeland, died last Sunday aged 78.
