The National Allotment Gardens Trust is using its sixth annual week to raise the profile of allotment gardening. Campaigners hope to encourage amateur gardeners, and demonstrate to councils the benefits of vegetable allotments.

The Glorious Twelfth

The start of the grouse shooting season in the UK. Around 450,000 birds are shot in Britain each year, mainly in Yorkshire, Northumberland and Scotland. Breeding pairs of grouse are down to around 250,000 from 3 million 100 years ago.

Edinburgh Film Festival

The Edinburgh International Film Festival takes place from 15-26 August. This is its 61st year, making it the UK's longest continuously running film festival. It attracts around 60,000 visitors. Expected guests this year include Bob Hoskins.

Exiled Thai premier goes on trial

The corruption case against exiled Thai Prime Minister and Man City FC owner Thaksin Shinawatra begins in Thailand.

Manchester Pride

The annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) festival held in Manchester runs from 17-27 August. The festival fundraises for local HIV and LGBT communities and last year raised [pound]126,000. Events include exhibitions and live music.

Trial of Liberia ex-ruler Charles Taylor

The trial of Charles Taylor, former president of Liberia, resumes at the International Criminal Court in The Hague on Monday 20 August. He faces 11 charges for crimes against humanity and the trial is expected to last 12 to 18 months.

The V Festival

The two-day music festival at sites in Chelmsford and Staffordshire features acts such as Foo Fighters and The Killers as well as fresh talent such as Mika and Mark Ronson.
