Retail_Spindler quits George for 'family'

Independent on Sunday, The,  Aug 12, 2007

The head of George, the value fashion label at Asda, has unexpectedly quit and left the company.

Angela Spindler, an executive director of Asda and international head of the George label, is one of the UK's most highly regarded female retailers. She left her post last week and quit the company on the same day.

Asda, which is owned by the giant US chain Wal-Mart, said she had left for "family reasons".

The company's chief executive, Andy Bond, who previously ran the George business, has taken day-to-day control of the business until a replacement is appointed.

Ms Spindler, a mother of teenage children, worked for Asda for a decade and prior to running George was the trading and marketing director.

In an internal note to staff, Mr Bond said he was "disappointed" that Ms Spindler had resigned.

George's fortunes have suffered from stiff competition from Primark.
