Their hands, feet and even skulls make gruesome "souvenirs" and their pelts can fetch thousands of pounds on the black market. But the four gorillas that were killled last week in the Democratic Republic of Congo were left intact, prompting the question: why did they die? The massacre of the three females and a silverback male, from a family of 12 known to researchers, brings to 11 the number of mountain gorillas killed this year in the Virunga National Park.
Just 700 or so mountain gorillas are thought to survive in the wild.
