Jenni Murray, who returned to BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour on Friday after battling breast cancer, told Ariel, the BBC's in-house journal, about her lowest point. During chemotherapy, she asked her husband to shave off what remained of her hair. "It was the worst day of all. My hair was coming out at such a rate, so David finished the job.

I cried and cried, but then I got a good wig and now the hair has started to come back, though I am shocked to see it's very grey." She said of chemotherapy: "There was a cumulative effect that wore me out. I've lost track of the number of sessions I had. In saying that, you try not to be obsessed with the disease. Breast cancer's a diagnosis no one want to hear, but an awful lot of us do hear it." Facing a mastectomy, she thanked her consultant for putting it in perspective. "He said: 'I can't make you look perfect naked, but I can make you feel really confident when you are in your clothes.' The looking perfect naked thing has not happened for many years. I'll be happy with the confidence."
